WATCH: New Redruth’s car guard stranded after blaze burns his shack

Paulos Namane (68) appeals for assistance from the community following a blaze that burned his shack to ashes on June 2.

New Redruth’s well-known car guard, Paulos Namane, is left distressed after losing all his belongings after a blaze broke out on June 2 at about 12:30.

The 68-year-old pensioner’s shack, which burnt to ashes, was situated at a parking lot in Clinton Road.

Namane who considers himself a health fanatic has lived in the area for at least 14 years.

He suffered major losses, like his clothes, groceries, Sassa card, identity document and his savings of R3 000.

Namane told the RECORD that he suspects that the fire was orchestrated by car thieves who wanted to get him out of the way.

“It is not clear what started the fire because there wasn’t anything alight in my shack, I didn’t even have power supply. This must have been done by someone who had a problem with me guarding cars because I honestly didn’t have any enemies,” he said.

The parking lot in which he resided is said to have been used as a caravan park where Namane has safeguarded the area for years.

He said after all his years staying there, this was the first time that such an ordeal occurred.

Alberton Gym has since committed to assisting him with a temporary place of residence.

Venetia Adrial of Alberton Gym said: “The community knows him very well. He has been guarding the area for years now and he is also best known for being a golfer. We appeal to any Good Samaritan out there to assist him in any way possible.”

Adrial reiterated that she was concerned that a similar incident might occur if Namane rebuilds his shack at the same spot.
