New Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUVs blast into Mzansi

The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 models are currently on sale in South Africa.

Mercedes-AMG in Mzansi is introducing its new GLE 53 4Matic+ and GLE 53 4Matic+ Coupe in the mid-size SUV market.

Powering the new SUVs is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with 320 kW of power and 520 Nm of torque. Mercedes-AMG claims the SUVs hurtle from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 250 km/h.

The engine is paired with an EQ Boost starter generator that briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. According to Mercedes-AMG, the system enhances performance and driving dynamics, while also reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

All that amount of power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

On the outside, the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 and GLE 53 Coupe come fitted with an AMG-specific radiator grille, large 20-inch light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering as standard.

There are seven rim variants available, from 20 to 22 inch.

The interior is equipped with an AMG-specific interior such as red contrasting topstitching on the upholstery and red seat belts. There is an optional, foldable third row of seats, which make the GLE 53 4Matic+ a seven-seater.

Ingress and egress at the third-row seats is made easier thanks to the fully electrically adjustable second seat row.

There is an AMG Performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather with red contrasting topstitching and red 12-o’clock marking plus a standard MBUX system.
