Self-taught baker establishes a business amid lockdown

During a time where businesses are the hardest hit as a result of the pandemic, a family-oriented mother of two has put her skills to good use.

Pulane Ndou, who is an accountant by profession, decided to raise the standard by starting a bakery at the end of October.

This is after her industry was negatively affected by the pandemic, leading her to opt for running her own business.
Based in Elandspark, she is the owner of Pulie Delight Bakery.

“This was after I noticed the negative impact caused by the pandemic, from seeing many companies close down to retrenchments and salary cuts. Then, the fear of uncertainty gave me an idea to start the bakery. I then decided to change my backyard cottage into a bakery,” said Ndou.

From being an occasional baker who only baked biscuits and scones for her family, she realised she was deeply passionate about baking.

“I never went into any bread training and I realised during lockdown that I love baking. Since we were all locked in our homes, I would bake almost every day. I then decided to research what was needed to bake proper bread for selling,” she said.

She told the RECORD she still yearns to learn more about the confectionery fraternity.

“There are days where I feel hopeless and want to give up, but I constantly have to remind myself that it doesn’t have to always be glitter. One day, everything will operate smoothly,” she said.
