Effective policing leads to three arrests

Three men were arrested when police found cellphone tower batteries in their possession on Saturday.

Police arrested three men along the N3 Freeway on Saturday after they were found in possession of suspected stolen cellphone tower batteries.

Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit members Sgt Selaelo Mpebe, Const Anthea van der Merwe and Const Mncedisi Khuzwayo were deployed to patrol the Heidelberg policing area when they stopped a white Toyota Quantum at around 3.30pm.

Four occupants were travelling from Durban in the direction of Johannesburg.Upon searching the vehicle, the police noticed mielie meal bags under the seats.

When the members searched the bags, they found six cellphone tower batteries with an estimated street value of R66 000.

The men could not give any satisfactory explanation as to how they came to be in possession of the batteries.
They were arrested and will appear in the Heidelberg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Heidelberg SAPS station commander Col Phiwe Samuel Ndwandwe applauded the assistance of crime-prevention units in the fight against various crimes committed along major routes.
