City responds to waste removal disruptions

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) confirmed the non-availability of some waste removal vehicles due to mechanical breakdowns has affected collection schedules in certain areas.

Waste collection has recently been affected due to mechanical breakdowns of some of the waste removal vehicles.
This has been confirmed by the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) after reports of waste removal disruptions in Alberton.

Zweli Dlamini, the City’s spokesperson, said some of their refuse collection vehicles, namely REL compactor trucks, are at the workshop due to mechanical breakdowns.

“The depot was running at 20 per cent capacity on January 25, which improved to 42 per cent on January 28. The backlogs created were cleared within the 24 to 72 hours or over the following weekend when they arose,” he said.

According to Dlamini, this is just a temporary setback that will be resolved as the availability will improve in the coming week.

When asked about the availability of waste removal vehicles, he assured the RECORD that the CoE has enough waste collection vehicles.

He reiterated that mechanical breakdowns and Covid-19-related delays in dealing with breakdowns affected the availability.

Ward 38 councillor Malcolm Maifala-Masebe said: “As the councillor of the area, along with other councillors, we have raised the issue at the previous council meeting held on January 28. Please note this issue will delay waste removal service delivery for the coming weeks.”

He advised that on waste removal days, the community should take their bins out and late in the afternoon bring them back in and take them out again the next day.

“Please also send an email to hanyane.selolo@ekurhuleni.gov.za or dawn.pienaar@ekurhuleni.gov.za to highlight that your bin was not collected on your scheduled day,” he said.
