DEMS advises vigilance during this festive season

DEMS has advised residents to be vigilant with braai fires.

With many South Africans prone to host celebrations and braais during this festive season, the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) DEMS has advised residents to be vigilant with braai fires.

This after many cases were reported to DEMS of people mistakenly forgetting to extinguish braai fires, and as a result, lapas catch fire.

William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson, warned that this is a time where the community should be cautious.

“We advise people to put out fires because this can have an adverse impact if not attended. We also advise people to braai outdoors in a ventilated space instead of doing it indoors since this smoke can also be harmful to a person’s health,” he said.

Ntladi also told the RECORD that people who are swimming while under the influence of alcohol are at risk of drowning.

He advised parents to supervise their children when swimming.

Ntladi said the CoE’s emergency fire services are readily available to assist the community during this festive season. He also reminded residents that ambulance services have been provincialised.

The public may contact the Gauteng provincial call centre on 011 564 2210/11. The CoE’s 29 fire stations are all linked to the life-threatening call centre on 011 458 0911.
