No justice for Senzo Meyiwa is a travesty

The story of the brief but tragic life of Orlando Pirates and South African national football goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has proved to be another serious indictment on our country’s criminal justice system.

Here is a local lad, who, like thousands of other youngsters grew up in an underdeveloped neighbourhood in our beautiful country. Young, gifted and driven by his passion for the love of his chosen sport, he went on to excel beyond his wildest dreams.

Legend has it that Senzo started his football journey with nothing more than a pair of old, torn, hand-me-down soccer boots and a passion to make a name for himself. His determination, hard work coupled with his unquenchable thirst and desire to succeed saw him reach the pinnacle of the sport.

And as fate always does, hard work and providence rewarded Senzo generously.

Although he was married to his beautiful wife and mother of his children, many believe it was destiny and fate that paved the path that led to the couple’s tragic demise.

Respective fans and followers say they believe it was the fiery love affair with a popular singer that eventually lured Senzo to his death.

In the absence of a proper trial in a court of law and guided only by sketches drawn from police investigative reports presented by detectives, we do not know exactly what happened inside Kelly Khumalo’s home on the night of Senzo’s death.

The paramount question asked by those who seek justice is who fired the fatal shot that killed him, and why?

All the people who were present inside the Khumalo family home on the night Senzo was killed, know very well that no robbery took place neither inside nor outside the Khumalo residence that night, prior or after the murder incident.

Residents of Mzamo Acres who live in the vicinity where this tragic incident happened six years ago are adamant that the only rowdy commotion that disrupted the otherwise jovial evening came from the Khumalo residents after the shooting incident.

There was also reported that Meyiwa’s murder is linked to a convicted taxi hitman who is claimed to be serving a 30-year jail term for the murder of a taxi boss in Alexander.

This convicted prisoner is reported to have also shot Senzo inside Khumalo’s house three months earlier on October 26.

What hurts most about this case is that Mayiwa’s father died of a broken heart when he realised his efforts to persuade the police to do the right thing had fallen on deaf ears.

Which brings us back to the question: Why was the Senzo Meyiwa murder docket removed from the local crime detectives and transferred to be investigated by the province and later the national office of the SAPS?
