Top cop gets R20 000 bail

Bonang Mgwenya, a lieutenant general in the police, joins 14 other accused in a multi-million rand fraud case.

Bonang Mgwenya, a lieutenant general within the South African police, appeared in the specialised financial crime division of the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on October 12.

Mgwenya faces charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering and her case has been linked to a case involving a multi-million rand tender for emergency equipment for SAPS.

She is the 15th accused in the case.

When laying out its charges, the State indicated that according to them the accused was involved in facilitating aspects of the tender and as payment received a BMW X5, for which the deposit of R440 000 was paid for by one of her fellow accused.

Mgwenya received R20 000 bail and is expected to appear on October 16 alongside her fellow accused in Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
