Metro partially opens libraries

Nevertheless, not all libraries and services can be opened immediately due to the lockdown Level 2 restrictions

The Ekurhuleni metro has announced it is partially reopening some of its libraries in Ekurhuleni, starting from today, September 16.

Due to the Covid-19 lockdown the City of Ekurhuleni was prompted to close its libraries at the end of March.

However, permission to reopen the facilities has now been granted by Nkosinathi Mthethwa, the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.

Nevertheless, the metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, stated that not all libraries and services can be opened immediately due to the lockdown Level 2 restrictions designed to minimise the risk of exposure to the virus.

The following services will open from September 16:
• Study facilities at libraries listed below:
Limited number of students allowed to adhere to social distancing.
Two slots per day, Monday to Friday: 9am-12 noon and 2pm to 4pm.
• Online research questions answered
• Virtual libraries
• Circulation services at identified libraries – Drop and collect.

Patrons can either phone or email the library to request books. Librarians will select the books and put them together. These can be collected at a specific arranged time. All the books returned will be put in quarantine for at least seven days.

Unfortunately, due to the logistics and exposure, no computer facilities can be used. Patrons can use their own devices in the study facility through Wi-Fi connectivity.
