VIDEO: Girls Skate South Africa organises skate session for girls in Johannesburg
Skating is becoming increasingly popular among girls around the world, including in Johannesburg.
As women’s month draws to a close, Girls Skate South Africa organised a skate session for young girls at Tighy Park in Westdene.
More than 30 girls attended, with some being seasoned skaters and others being beginners.
Sharne Jacobs of Girls Skate South Africa says, “we’re just creating a safe space out here and having fun.”
“I think skateboarding does help people come out of their shell,” she adds.
When asked about the effects of Covid-19 on the skating scene, she says it has impacted it a lot, with level 2 only permitting less than 50 skaters in a skatepark at once.
Although traditionally gendered as a “boy’s sport,” skating is gaining popularity among girls worldwide.
What an apt way to end Women’s Month — breaking gender stereotypes and allowing young girls to express themselves in unconventional ways.
