#BulletproofVests: MMC says councillor is ‘obsessed with bringing EMPD to its knees’

Terblanche claimed he was recently approached by numerous EMPD officers, raising their concerns over the lack of availability of body armour

In an article recently published by the Advertiser, the DA Shadow MMC for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni, Clr Jaco Terblanche, accused the metro of failure to provide the City’s EMPD with adequate bulletproof vests to meet the current needs.

Responding to the allegations leveled against the leadership of the department, the municipality described the DA statement as a desperate attack of the MMC for Community Safety Clr Frans Mmoko’s leadership.

“We note the statement from Terblanche with serious reservations and disappointment. True to our strong held conviction, the councillor is obsessed with bringing the department to its knees, and he’s trying to pull all stops to rubbish its hard fought track record,” said Mmoko.

He stated that as the MMC he is bound by the standing orders to respond to every single question asked to the department.

“The statement seeks to fuel tensions within the EMPD and deliberately insinuate the low morale. We call on the councillor to come out of the shadows and make use of the council processes to hold us to account instead of resorting to grandstanding on other platforms. We have and are prepared to continue to be accountable as a department because we are satisfied of the progress we are making,” said Mmoko.

The MMC pointed out that the metro will soon be adding more personnel to he EMPD in order to ensure the safety of communities and their properties.

“No amount of petty destruction will derail us from the course of fighting lawlessness in this region,” he said.
