Old School Games to be held in Katlehong

Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong will host Old School Games on May 5 to bring fun and entertainment to the township children.

Diketo, Bibeke, Dilali, Kgati, Mgusha, Scotch, Matin Bhathi, Morabaraba, Black Mapatile, Zwepe ’n Cards are some of the indigenous games that will be played on the day.

Tebello Mompe, the organiser, believes that children engage in sexual activities at a young age and are suffering from obesity because they no longer play the games that children used to play many years ago. One of the main objectives of this event is to try and get more children taking part in such games, with the aim of alleviating teenage pregnancy and the usage of drugs and alcohol.

“We are quite aware that the times have changed. But locking children in their rooms and watching televisions is not good for their health. I have nothing against it but it has a lot of disadvantages because when you are not there to monitor what they are watching, they sometimes watch pornography and end up wanting to experiment what they have seen on television. Children who spend most of their time watching television do not get enough exercise. That is why some of them suffer from obesity.

“The reason why there were no children or at least a few children who suffered from obesity in the olden days is that they used to play games that involve more exercising than spending time watching television and playing video games,” said Mompe.

She said they want to introduce what might be a solution to the above problems.

“We want children to know these games – old school games their parents used to play,” Tebello said.

There is a small price tag that comes with all this. Children under the age of 10 will be charged an entrance fee of R20 per person, while those above the age of 10 and adults will be charged R50 per person.

Attendees are allowed to bring camp chairs along.
