Children with disabilities entertained on fun day

A two-day entertainment programme for children with disabilities, organised by Umkhonto Young Lions (UYL), was held in Vosloorus.

The entertainment began at Isiphosethu Special School on September 22 and at the Vosloorus Stadium on September 23.

Talking to Kathorus MAIL, Nompumelelo Mehlomane, one of the organisers, said the purpose of the event was to instil self-confidence in children with disabilities.

“We want children with disabilities to feel important by providing them the same entertainment as other children,”

said Mehlomane.

Elizabeth Dube, the deputy principal of Isiphosethu Special School, said they appreciated what UYL had done for the children.

“Children with disabilities are labelled because they are intellectually challenged and do not do the same syllabus as children without disabilities.

“This initiative by UYL is a way of showing them love and acceptance,” said Dube.

Dube sent a strong message to people who look down on their schoolchildren.

“People must not segregate or judge us. If they want to understand us, they must come to the school and learn more about us. These learners are good in sport, even better than some children without disabilities.

“We have trophies that these children won for us. We even have trophies for best special school in Gauteng for 2015 and 2016,” said Dube.

Children were entertained with jumping castles, music and dance.

Clowns were organised and made the schoolchildren laugh out loud.

The entertainment continued on September 23.

During the day both children with disabilities and those without disabilities and their parents were allowed to attend.

In addition to jumping castles there were powder paints, indigenous games and much more.

All the children and their parents had fun.
