The City of Ekurhuleni applauds the king of SAMA 2017

The City of Ekurhuleni applauds Senzo “Kwesta” Vilakazi, who swept almost all the awards that were up for grabs during the 23rd edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA) 2017.

The awards ceremony took place at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday, May 28, in North West.

The dedicated and hard-working Kwesta was born on August 11, 1988, and grew up in Katlehong.

He won six awards at this year’s SAMAs, including Best Collaboration Album, Samro Highest Airplay of the Year, Sampra Highest Airplay of the Year, Best Rap Album, Best Male Artist of the Year and Best Album of the Year.

On winning in all categories he was nominated for, Kwesta said the feeling was amazing.

“It means people are recognising the music and at this point it is just God’s work.

“People received my music well because it came from an honest heart. I am very happy that people really do appreciate my songs,” said Kwesta. “The bottom line is that people love my music because it carries a message,” said Kwesta.

Gugu Ndima, spokesperson at the mayor’s office, said the city joins millions of South Africans in congratulating Kwesta on his success.

“He scooped so many awards in one night. His journey illustrates that success doesn’t come overnight but recognition of talent happens on its own time through hard work and years of working on craft and dedication to passion,” said Ndima.

She said Kwesta joins the stars who representing not only the city but also the country, such as DJ Shimza, DJ Sbu, Lira and Charlize Theron.

“As the city we would like to honour him and hope that this is the only beginning of greater thing to come for the local star,” said Ndima.

She concluded by congratulating all the SAMA award winners of 2017.

  •  Best Album of the Year – Dakar II
  •  Best Rap Album of the Year – Dakar II
  •  Best Collaboration Album – Dakar II

  •  Sampra Highest Airplay of the Year – Ngudi
