Ace top cop talks of US visit

Germiston Flying Squad’s Sgt Ngwako Ramara is back from a gruelling two-week learning tour of the US, where he says he and his colleagues were taught a lot more than just a few new tricks and skills in dealing with vehicle theft crimes.

Sgt Ramara was part of a team of SAPS officers who were selected to attend a two-week training seminar hosted by the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators in Atlanta, in the USA.

The team also visited a number of other police precincts in other states where they were engaged in detecting different forms of vehicle crime investigation skills and techniques.

Although Ramara, could not divulge much about what he and his colleagues were taught about vehicle crime fighting skills by their American counterparts, the crack, Kathorus-based flying squad head, said the public can expect drastic changes in the way police will be investigating vehicle-related crimes in the future.

The shy married father of two teenage daughters, Tharollo and Nthabeleng, told Kathorus MAIL, that his only regret about his trip was not being able to take them along.

“But next time, I hope to save enough money to be able to take them on holiday in the US,” said the soft-spoken police officer.

Ramara cited his visit to the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee and the time he spent with members of the New York Police Department (NYPD) – as the two most fulfilling accomplishments of his 14-day visit the US.

“I listened to the history of the Jack Daniels distillery and found the policing programmes of the NYPD, something worth learning from,” said Ramara.
