Healthy netball challenge held at school

The aim of this event was to encourage the youth to stay away from any kind of abuse, be it substance, emotional or even physical abuse.

Give a Little Love is a Vosloorus-based non-profit organisation which is set to make a difference in the community.

They held a netball challenge on August 27 at Tuto Lesedi Secondary School’s netball grounds.

The aim of this event was to encourage the youth to stay away from any kind of abuse, be it substance, emotional or even physical abuse.

The first game was between the learners of Thuto Lesedi Secondary School and their teachers. The learners took the lead in less than a minute of the start of the game, with a goal scored by Nqobile Mbele. It took a while before the teachers’ team found the net as they missed a number of chances to score chances. By the time they scored their first goal the learners’ team was already four goals ahead.

The score ended by nine goals to six in the learners’ favour.

“This was one of best performances. I enjoyed myself. It always feels good to beat your teachers. I think they (teachers) played very well. It’s just that their fitness level was below ours as they are not training,” said Mbele.

Ntokozo Mavundla, a learner who played for the teacher’s team and scored four of the six goals, also had a very good game.

“I think my teammates (teachers) played very well considering the fact that they haven’t trained in a while. But they gave their opponents (learners) a run for their money. As for scoring goals, I feel great. Lastly, I want to thank Julia Williams for inviting me to come and play in these games. I feel very honoured,” said Mavundla.

The organiser of the event, Julia Williams, was very happy seeing the games become a success, but expressed her disappointment in the teams that did not turn up. “I am very happy for everything that is happening here today except for one thing about the teams that did not turn up. Congratulations to the winning team on beating their opponents. Both teams showed good sportsmanship, enjoyed the games and had fun at the same time,” said Williams.

Onika Kganyago, one of the teachers, said, “It feels good to be part of these games. We lost to a good team full of young and energetic players. Congratulations to them. We lost not because we are bad but because we do not train. I would like to encourage teachers to participate in sports for the sake of their own health,” said Kganyago.

The next game took place later that day between two Thuto Lesedi school teams, Thuto Lesedi Juniors and Tuto Lesedi seniors.

The game ended in a nine-all draw.
