FLEEING illegal hawkers in Thokoza and Katlehong left behind clothing, mini stoves, plastic ware, carpets and fruits and vegetables.

On Friday, July 22, between 14:00 and 22:00, the special Bumper to Bumper operation was conducted, focusing on those who contravene the municipality by-laws, concentrating specifically on the problematic Kgotso, Hospital and Khumalo streets.

“Undoubtedly, aware that they don’t possess a trading permit and obstructing pedestrians on pavements, hawkers in Thokoza and Katlehong opted to run and leave their stock behind, rather than to be arrested,” said EMPD spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Wilfred Kgasago.

The metro police confiscated 200 counterfeit DVDs, 80 backpacks, 85 CDs, 13 floor carpets, 100 handbags, 12 winter jackets, a big box full of whiteners and detergents, six small paraffin stoves and 50 pairs of ladies’ lingerie.

There were also 20 pairs of socks, 11 advertising boards/signs, different types of rat poison, boxes of plastic ware, refuse bags and perishables such as fruits and vegetables seized.

All the seized goods were stored at the EMPD Vosloorus By-Laws offices and can be released on payment of a R200 fine. Counterfeit goods cannot be reclaimed and highly perishable goods are discarded after 40 hours.
