Overflow FC prevail in the VFLA

VLFA celebrated and crowned its junior league champions and referees at Jabulani Dumane Hall on February 11.

Overflow FC dominated the 2021/22 Vosloorus Local Football Association (VLFA) junior league season.

They have crowned champions in three divisions – U13, U15 and U17. Lucky Birds FC won the U13 division two and Pure Stars FC claimed the U11 trophy.

VLFA celebrated and crowned its junior league champions and referees at Jabulani Dumane Hall on February 11.
Parents, players and team managers of various clubs attended the ceremony, which started with the AGM in the morning.

The coach of Pure Stars, Thabo Moleko, credited the players for the team’s victory and said everything went according to plan with the U11 division.

He said they also leant a valuable lesson with other divisions, citing that they lost focus on the league because they participated in many tournaments.

“Our U11s did not play any tournaments last year, hence the achievement. I am happy, and the players are happy as well. This season we will not play tournaments and will only focus on the league,” said Moleko.

Overflow U17 coach, Doctor Khumalo, said it was a difficult season for the coaches and the committee, but they managed to overcome the challenges.

The U17 champions, Overflow, lift the trophy.

“We have players from disadvantaged families, but with the little we have, we tried our best to make everyone happy because, in the end, the team’s success is everyone’s success,” noted Khumalo.

He said it is fulfilling that they won in three divisions. However, like any other team, they had their fair share of challenges.

“We had to provide transport from our own pockets for players whose families could not contribute. It would be great if we could get a sponsor because we will be playing in the Safa Ekurhuleni Regional League (ERL) this year.”

The chairperson of Overflow FC, Thato Matebesi, said they want to challenge themselves by competing in the Safa ERL.

“This will mean we will play home and away games against teams from outside Vosloorus,” explained Matebesi.

“I think the more we get challenged from outside, the more we will grow as a team because playing locally prevents us from seeing the team’s growth.”

He said they are not necessarily going to the ERL intending to win. Their focus is developing their young talents to the best of their abilities.

The U13 division two champions, Lucky Birds FC.

“We want players to be able to take their talent to the next level, that is an achievement on its own. For example, we have an U13 player, Thato Mahapa, who was selected to train with Jomo Cosmos FC. That is what we want,” he concluded.

VLFA runner-up teams:

• U11 Villa Rangers

• U13 Varsity United

• U15 FC Villa
