United Eden Girls FC crowned Women’s month champions

The top 8 tournament was hosted at Mpontsheng soccer ground, the first leg kick-started on August 6, followed by the second leg on August 8 and the final on August 9.

United Eden Girls FC (UEG) were crowned champions of the FBS and Kalfa Women’s Day Celebration Tournament following their impressive performance during the competition.

UEG FC claimed the trophy after defeating Thembalethu 0-11 in the final match. They walked away with the first price which includes a trophy, jersey and 22 gold medals.

Thembalethu secured the second position. They won 22 silver medals and jerseys. Semi-finalist Alberto FC received 22 bronze medals and two balls, while ZK Juventus walked home with 30 cones.

The top 8 tournaments were hosted at Somhlolo ground. The first leg kick-started on August 6, followed by the second leg on August 8 and the final on August 9.

Head coach of UEG FC Brian Groenewaldt said he is grateful for the results because it was a league tournament.

“It is a milestone achievement for the girls and I am happy for them, they fought and gave their all on the pitch.

On my side I can say God was with us this time around because last year we came out in the third position,” said Groenewaldt.

Lucia Silaule head coach of Thembalethu FC said they played well in the semi-finals, however, the final was a different story.

She said the players were distracted by noise during the final.

United Eden Girls FC players Lebo Masetla and Tumi Maqeleqele.

“This is the second time we lose in the finals but last year was better, we lost by three,” said Silaule.

The tournament sponsor and FBS FC chairperson Frank Madonsela said FBS FC aimed to provide Kalfa ladies with an opportunity by hosting the ladies’ tournament.

He said the purpose of the tournament was to give back to the community as well as to uplift women’s football in Katlehong.

“This is the second tournament to be hosted for the ladies league in Katlehong on women’s month. The tournament will be held every year. It will give opportunities to Katlehong ladies football teams to boost their talent as the tournament is all about uplifting the ladies’ football,” said Madonsela.

• Dreamvilla 1 vs UTD Eden 4.

Second leg results:

• Dreamvilla 0 vs UTD Eden 2.

• Thembalethu 6 vs Dikwena 1.

• ZK Juventus 2 vs Moleleki 1.

• Royal J Stars 3 vs Alberto 1.

Semi-final and final:

• Eden 1 vs Alberto 0.

• Thembalethu 2 vs ZK Juventus 0.

Losers final:

• Alberton 2 vs ZK Juventus 0.

Final game:

• Thembalethu 0 vs UTD Eden 11.
