SAB League proves challenging for Cambridge

"It will be back to the drawing board from here. We will need to focus on our next match."

Cambridge FC played their first match in the SAB League on October 23 against Katlehong FBS FC at Hunters Field Stadium in Katlehong.

The match ended 2-0 in favour of Katlehong FBS.

“We started the match off slow,” said coach Ignatius Maphike.

“The first half was very technical for both teams, as both played very protective football and it seemed as if neither team wanted to make any mistakes.”

Katlehong FBS gave Cambridge a run for their money by adding pressure and forcing them to play the ball forward.

“They had a physical advantage over us,” Maphike continued.

“Our players were small in stature against them.”

During the first half, the Katlehong team broke through the Cambridge defence when they stole the ball from Nhlanhla Mhlaba in the middle of the field and scored.

The second half saw Cambridge trying to maintain possession of the ball; however, the wind made it difficult for the team to play their normal positions.

Katlehong FBS capitalised on other mistakes made by the team from Nigel and doubled their lead.

The Cambridge team will go back to the drawing board.

Cambridge didn’t give up the fight, trying to push through, but couldn’t get the goal through.

“It’s a new environment for the boys,” said Maphike.

“Sooner rather than later, this should be a wake-up call that life in this league will not be easy. We are proud of the boys, they showed heart and didn’t give up.”

Cambridge head coach Godfrey Hermanus said: “It will be back to the drawing board from here. We will need to focus on our next match.”
