World Aids Day races to be held in Katlehong

The World Aids Day Half-Marathon is an annual event that takes place on the first Sunday of December.

The community of Katlehong and surrounding areas will be treated to 5km, 10km and 21.1km races at Huntersfield Stadium on December 2.

The event will be hosted by the NGO Soul City in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni Sports and Recreation.

The World Aids Day Half-Marathon is an annual event that takes place on the first Sunday of December. It aims to commemorate World Aids Day, which falls on December 1.

Soul City spokesperson Arnold Ravhututu said the purpose of the day is to create awareness about HIV/Aids and general health.

“We will provide more information to communities about health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and tuberculosis. We will explain the dos and don’ts of healthy living to members of the community,” said Ravhututu.

He added they will also talk about the importance of keeping fit through exercise.

“Exercise on its own can minimise the risk of diseases.”

Entry fees for the races range from R90 for the 10km run to R110 for the 21.1km run.

Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC) will participate in this year’s event.

Club chairman Hloni Motloung said: “We will run our famous bus on the day and distribute water and other refreshments at water points. We will also hand out candy to members of the community who come out to cheer on the runners.”
