Karate in Gauteng in a healthy state

Competitive karate students from Gauteng, North West Eastern, Cape Town, Limpopo, KZN, Western Cape, Northen Cape and Zimbabwe attended the event.

Gauteng Kyokushininkan Karate Organisation hosted a National Karate Tournament at Tsakane Multi-Sport Ground on September 22 where more than 300 full-contact karate athletes from all over the country took part.

Competitive karate students from Gauteng, North West Eastern, Cape Town, Limpopo, KZN, Western Cape, Northen Cape and Zimbabwe attended the event.

Shihan Collen Sedoaba, the Gauteng branch chief, was excited with the attendance of parents from different provinces who filled the hall.

“I am so excited to see parents support their children, especially those who came from as far as Western Cape. I am certain that the quality of competition is improving every year,” said Sedoaba.

The tournament was divided into two kata and kumite competition.

The president of the African Full-Contact Karate Organisation (AFCKO), sensei Thulane Sibisi, attended the event.

He said he was also impressed with the attendance.

“I would like to thank all women and the youth who came in their numbers to make this day a success. At the same time, I would like to encourage local full-contact karate instructors to recruit more members in primary and secondary schools to instil discipline and respect in our community. Karate students are taught to respect and to be disciplined,” said Sibisi.

He said: “Our role is to influence positive messages and awareness to the youth not to condone what is happening at schools where children are disrespecting their teachers.”

Sibisi said the next event is scheduled for October 10 where AFCKO team will spar against the South African Police Service team in Cape Town.

• Thabo Malajie Gauteng Kyokushinkan Karate

• Siyabonga Mayisa Gauteng Kyokushinkai Karate Federation

• Veli Mshweshwe North West Shinkyokushin Karate

• Mojalifa Mokatsane Limpopo Shinkyokushin Karate

Best male fighter in the current year 2018 was given Mattys Laubscher from Western Cape Kyokushinkan while the best female fighter award in 2018 went to Fundiswa Chiliza from KZN.

Two karatekas students were awarded trophies.
