Learners take part in cross country race

The Cross Country Athletics district challenge was held at Thaba Trails Sports Ground in Alberton on Friday, August 25.

Primary schools from Katlehong One, Katlehong Two, Katlehong Three and Alberton took part in the competition.

Refilwe Tsaagane from Tshabalala Primary School said the purpose of the event was to select athletes to represent Ekurhuleni South at provincial level in Tshwane on September 3.

“Six athletes per age group were selected. That is a total of 30 athletes. What makes me even happier is that one of the athletes is from my school,” said Tsagaane.

Tsaagane said most of the athletes were used to training on different terrain than the one in the challenge.

“We trained on flat ground whereas the cross-country ground today was hilly. That affected our athletes big time,” Tsaagane said.

Tsaagane applauded the athletes from Katlehong One for the talent displayed on the day.

“None of them failed to complete the race. If they were used to a hilly pitch they would have done better. I am proud of them,” she concluded.
