Frith van der Merwe talks Comrades, Benoni with #LG_KevEd

Comrades Fever has got us good.

Benoni City Times sports journo Logan “LG” Green and BCT editor Kevin “KevEd” van der List are heading down to Durban tomorrow ahead of the 2017 Comrades Marathon up run on Sunday (June 4) where they will be representing Caxton East Rand/South, catching up with East Rand runners and supporters, and just experiencing all the sights, sounds and smells of Zululand.

The chaps will be documenting every step of the journey and will bring you all the Comrades thrills and spills via our social media platforms.

So, who better to speak to than Benoni’s very own “Comrades Queen”, Frith van der Merwe?

Van der Merwe, of course, still holds the Comrades women’s down run record (with a time of 5:54:43 in 1989) and still holds the Two Oceans women’s 56km record time of 3:30:36 (also in 1989).

The boys sat down with the Benoni High School English teacher and Farrarmere resident to talk about those records, all things Comrades and, of course, Benoni.

Is she nervous that her record might be broken some day?

What ever happened to her trademark red ribbon?

What advice does she have for aspiring Comrades runners?

Why she does not have an up run record?
