Kathorus Golf Club needs support

The Kathorus Golf Club (KGC) will on Friday, April 7, hold a meeting to discuss a tournament that will take place at Polar Park Golf Course in Springs on Sunday, April 9.

The challenges that the golf club face will also be discussed at the meeting.

The March 9 tournament will be the fourth one since the beginning of the year. The last one took place on Saturday, March 11, at the same venue in Springs.

The club consists of 50 members and organises tournaments once a month during the second weekend of every month.

During the practice session that took place at Vosloorus Golf Course, the KGC invited Kathorus MAIL to share some of the challenges it faces.

Chairman Douglas Jonas said they do not have proper training facilities.

“We have identified a place in Extension 23 in Vosloorus which would be good for our golf club,” said Jonas. “It is about 14 hectares and golf courses are normally six to seven hectares. We can use six hectares for the golf course and the rest we can use as a multi-sport centre. We can have a basketball court, netball court, tennis court, car park, driving range and even build our own clubhouse.

“The thing is, the place is privately owned. It needs to be purchased. And we do not have money to buy the place. We would like our municipality to buy the place for us.”

Secretary Themba Nkosi said they would like to get recognition from the municipality.

“We are planning to register our club as a non-profit organisation (NPO). Thereafter we can register our club at the municipality under Ekurhuleni Sports and Recreation. Maybe we will get recognition and be able to get support from them,” said Nkosi.

KGC captain Aaron Lamola said, “Even the owners of the land have agreed with us that the place is perfect to be used as a golf course, because it is near running water.

“We would like to get that place because the one we are currently using in Vosloorus is owned by Erwart Sewerage System. If they can decide to ban us from using the place, our dreams as golfers are going to vanish.”

One of the golfers, David Mofokeng, said if the identified place could be used to build other sports facilities as well, it would be good for tourism.

“There will be so many national games and tournaments that can be hosted in that place. As a result it will put our township on the map. And the lovers of the mentioned sports will be attracted to the place,” said Mofokeng.
