VLCWSI takes young athletes to water
Victoria Lake Club Water Sport Institution (VLCWSI) held a canoe race at Dabulamanzi Canoe Club in Emmarentia on Saturday, March 4.
This was the second race the VLCWSI athletes have participated in since the beginning of the year. The first was at Victoria Lake Club on Sunday, February 12, at Germiston Lake.
The coaches have been selecting athletes based on their performances and attendance.
About 12 primary schools and 10 high schools were represented at the event.
In the primary school division, the first-place finish was a tie between Sekgutlong Primary School, from Katlehong, and St Dominic’s Primary School, from Boksburg.
The Sekgutlong team consisted of Perfect Piri, Lungani Vilakasi and Khaya Tshabalala. The St Dominic’s team included Natasha Brown, Shanon Brown and Katie O’Hara.
The third-place finish was taken by Monde Primary School from Katlehong. The team members included Katleho Moloi, Boitemelo Mosia and Boitemelo Dikotsi.
In the individual results the first place finish was occupied by Natasha Brown from St Dominic’s Primary, while the second place was occupied by Sebastian Greenwood from Hurlyvale Primary School. At third place was Helen van Vuuren from Delville Laerskool.
In the high school division, CBC Boksburg’s team, made up of Damian Muller, Jason Muller and Cavin Brown, stamped their authority on the event and took the first place finish. Benoni High School’s team, including Ruchero Naiker, Connor Erasmus and Jordan Cox, settled for second place. In third place was St David Marist, from Inanda, with team members Campbell Tiley and Lucas Govetto.
In the individual results, the first-place finish was taken by Damian Muller from CBC Boksburg, Matthew Inglis from Ashton Benoni High came second and Jason Muller from CBC Boksburg took the third place.
Eddie Thage, organiser of the race, said the parents’ support is still lacking.
“I feel very bad because of poor parent attendance in these games. Parents must come in their numbers to support their kids. There is free transport to take parents to wherever the race is taking place.
“As for the mayor and the MMC of sport in Ekurhuleni, I hope they appreciate what we are doing.
“To all those who have given us support, I would like to thank them,” said Thage.

Sailing news
The South African Sailing Northern Region, which incorporates Gauteng, Northwest, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Free State, held its annual schools regatta at Victoria Lake Club in Germiston on Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5. Schools from all over the region came to compete in the two-day course racing event.
The conditions were light and variable, making it very challenging. It was great to have the H14’s coming from the Vaal as well as the school’s from VLCWSI’s water sport programme competing in their first sailing event. Each sailor raced for an overall position and then the schools result was calculated on the three highest-ranked sailors.
