Discipline is about small steps

Discipline is key to your consistency.

“My father gave me the best advice of my life. He said, ‘Whatever you do, don’t wake up at 65 years old and think about what you should have done with your life.’” — George Clooney

Great life is not about taking quantum leaps, the big steps taken all at once, it’s about anti-quantum leaps, small steps taken consistently over time. Small steps are all about simple disciplines made consistently over time.

You see, it’s more like eating an apple daily for 30 days which is different from eating 30 apples in one day, the results won’t be the same. This is why it is said an apple a day, not 30 apples a day, keeps the doctor away. It’s a journey of small steps taken consistently over time.

This is true with building a great life, it takes patience, consistent effort, and commitment. I normally see some people who join gyms and other health clubs being so over-ambitious to lose 20 to 30kg of weight within a month or even less.

They climb on a treadmill and run as if they will shed off 2kg per each 20-minute session. These members set unreasonable expectations of themselves which end up discouraging them and quit.

Like anything of great value, it takes time and discipline. In our world where instant gratification has been made fashionable, discipline and commitment have increasingly become more difficult and almost non-existent.

Discipline simply means sticking to your words and making your commitments your commitments. Discipline is not what you say, but it’s what is shown in your daily behaviour.

It’s about eating that one apple every day for 30 days which can easily be enjoyable rather than frustrating and punishing yourself by eating 30 apples on day 30.

Making your life count requires daily discipline which accumulatively works to your advantage and strength.
