Do something about drinking in public

I appeal to both the police and the municipality to curb excessive drinking by enforcing the necessary laws to prevent this.

I find the consumption of alcohol in public disgusting.

Young people don’t seem to understand that drinking in public is a criminal offence and that this is something that was unheard of in this country before. And with alcohol outlets and bottle stores now open for longer hours and even on Sunday, South Africans of all races have become alcoholics at a very young age.

It is sad that even young people seem to think that if someone does not drink alcohol he or she is either stupid or out of fashion. Young people must understand that alcohol has never improved the lives of people, but destroys them.

The police and the municipality should strictly monitor all taverns and shebeens operating in the townships. Strict operating hours for taverns must be enforced to make sure that those who deal in alcohol do not sell to young people under the age of 21.

The fewer taverns we have in our communities, the more likely we are to encourage young people and especially women to stay away from abusing alcohol.
