I am shocked at the behaviour of learners

Parent demands answers from government regarding the high-rise of violence in classrooms.

Edwin Mbilo Maluleka, Brackenhurst, writes:

It is shocking the way school children behave these days.

Never in my life have I heard of or witnessed a learner assaulting a teacher in class in the presence of fellow learners.

This is a sad indication of how lawless schools have become in democratic South Africa.

The first question any adult person asks when something like this happens in a school is the safety of other teachers as well as that of other learners.

How safe are the other teachers and fellow learners in a school when male learners carry knives, guns and other undesirable weapons to class?

What is the school governing body doing about the rising crime in our schools to make sure education continues as normal and crime and violence are eradicated?

I regard what is happening in our school as a sign that education in South Africa has dismally failed both the teachers and the learners.

The education department has also failed to play a leading role in the education of our children in our schools.

The Department of Education and Training is supposed to be a guiding light in the education of our children from primary school to tertiary education.

But looking at the state of our schools and the dismal behaviour of our children in school, I am left with no option but to declare our education system a failure.

The democratic government is also entirely to blame for the pathetic state of education and discipline in the country’s schooling system.

As a concerned parent who has the interest of his children at heart, I demand serious answers from the government about where it is taking the country’s education system.
