Foreign spaza shops owners need to step it up

"Authorities will have to take the bull by the horns when it comes to the issue of foreign-owned spaza shops in the townships."

Desmond Kubayi from the Moleleki Section write:

Authorities will have to take the bull by the horns when it comes to the issue of foreign-owned spaza shops in the townships.

Firstly, South Africa seems to be the only country on the African continent, if not in the world, that has handed over the feeding of its people to foreign nationals. Since the advent of foreign-owned spaza shops, the number of frightful tempering with the food sold at the informal shops has increased tremendously.

In the past weeks, prior to what happened in Soweto and other parts of the country, we have seen how the foodstuff sold at spaza shops has been compromised. This has led to the discovery of fake bread, and fake tinned foods and beverages at the expense of the health of the consumer.

Township residents need to be assured the food they buy from spaza shops is safe and fit for human consumption. We cannot have people selling us edible and perishable food products from the very same shops where they live, sleep and wash.

The Ekurhuleni Municipality will have to ensure its new municipal by-laws system is in place to monitor every tuck shop and spaza shop in Kathorus. It is wrong to allow communities to be subjected to unscrupulous business principles by corrupt business people.

Keep all spaza shops clean and compliant with food health by-laws and regulations or close each and every one of them down to avoid the wrath of the masses.
