What is happening in our schools?

“The increased violence, sex, crime and drugs that are prevalent in schools make my family fear for the future of our daughter.”

Fikile Grace Khuzwayo, Mailula Gardens, Vosloorus writes:

What is happening in our schools?

I am a mother of a four-year-old daughter who is supposed to be graduating from pre-school to a proper school in a year or two, but I am too scared to commit because of what is happening in our schools.

The increased violence, sex, crime and drugs that are prevalent in schools make my family fear for the future of our daughter.

The questions that keep my husband and I awake at night concerns the safety of learners at school.

As parents, we’ve always believed that the worst that could happen to a learner at school was the company of bad friends who would introduce her to drugs and teenage sex. But what is happening at schools right now is far more dangerous than drugs and sex.

It is the fear of every parent to be called from home to be informed that their child has been killed or has killed another learner in gang violence at school. Or worse still, that your child has murdered a teacher at the school.

School authorities will have to sit down together with parents and the police to find solutions to what must be done to eradicate lawlessness and crime at schools. I fear that unless something is done soon, schooling in South Africa will continue on this downhill slide to worse things than what is happening now.

I want to urge both parents and teachers to stand up and voice their concerns about what is taking place at our schools. If we fail to do that, education in South Africa is doomed.
