Are they serious about drugs?

I wonder how serious the authorities are about treating drug addiction among the youth?

It takes much longer than the three-month rehabilitation programmes provided by local drug rehabs centres to wean addicts off their addiction. And without any support system to back them up, many lapse back into addiction.

This “revolving-door” drug rehab treatment becomes unsustainable because most drug addicts simply walk out of rehab and straight into the next available drug den for a fix. As a former drug addict, I believe addicts need more than three months to kick the habit.

My suggestion is that authorities must commit to building proper rehab facilities that will accommodate addicts for treatment. A proper, fully equipped drug facility must be able to deal with all aspects of curing the patients of their addiction.

It would be encouraging to see the authorities come up with answers that would solve the addiction problem in our townships once and for all. The police will also have to be part of the solution by making sure that known drug dealers are brought to justice.
