Matric Results 2022: Top schools in Kathorus

“If any learner misses a SIP class, they would have to go home and bring their parents so that we have the commitment from the parents as well.”

Katlehong schools topped the list of the best-performing schools for the 2022 matric results in the entire Kathorus township that includes Vosloorus, Thokoza and Katlehong.

Top of the list is the Katlehong Engineering School of Specialisation (KESS), which obtained a 99.37% pass rate.
The school had 159 learners who wrote the matric exams. They achieved 62 bachelor’s degree passes, 72 diplomas and 18 higher certificates.

They are followed by Mpilisweni Secondary School (MSS) which obtained 97.73%.

A total of 264 learners wrote and 258 passed with 168 bachelor’s passes, 67 diplomas and 23 higher certificates.
Sjabulile Secondary School (SSS) achieved the third position with 96.98%.

The school registered 199 matrics and 193 of them passed with 95 bachelor’s, 65 diplomas and 33 higher certificates.

Mpilisweni Secondary School Grade 12 teachers are Sizeka Mathatha, Zanele Khumalo, Felicia Mngani, Fihliwe Mjezu, Nokwethemba Ngcobo, Nosisa Malusi, Somahlathi Nkosi, the principal Khaya Sinqaba, Xolisile Xaba, Nteboheng Motaung, Prudence Sono, Ngohelo Bangani, Nompilo Ntshangase and Nonceba Mkhatshwa.

Kathorus MAIL engaged with the three schools to find out how they prepared for the final exams throughout the year.

The deputy principal of SSS, Jane Tsotetsi, said although they were aiming for a 100% pass rate, they are still pleased with the 96.98% because it is still an improvement from the 2021 results of 95.80%.

“We prepared from day one when we opened on January 3, 2021. We reopened a week or two before the rest of the schools. We had our normal SIP classes and made sure that our learners attended in their numbers,” said Tsotetsi.

“If any learner missed a SIP class, they would have to go home and bring their parents so that we have the commitment from the parents as well.”

Grade 12 learners from Sjabulile Secondary School are Ryder Nthuba, Ivin Kgatla, Pinky Mofokeng, the deputy principal Jane Tsotetsi, Maria Sixeku, Lerato Sethunga, Bayi Tsoaela, Lungile Nhlabathi, Sizakele Khanyile, Zinhle Masuku and Sidwell Mphuthi.

She said the learners attended classes between 07:00 and 16:30 on weekdays and weekends they attended the compulsory SIP classes and on Sunday they have special classes for critical subjects.

Jaco Opperman, the principal of KESS, said the new Grade 12 learners usually start in November preparing after the school has issued the Grade 11 reports.

“By the time the normal school year starts, three weeks worth of work has already been done. I think that assists us to have sufficient time to revise before the exams in June, the preparatory and the final exam,” said Opperman.

He said the learners have morning classes at 07:00 and afternoon classes from Monday to Thursday between 15:h00 to 16:30 and weekends are normal school days.

“We also took them to a residential camp. I think that assisted a lot as we took them away from home where they have a lot of distractions.

“We assist them after we have analysed the question papers of the preparatory exam to know where to close the gap. We also give them sufficient time to study and prepare for the exam.”

Asanda Chili, a physical sciences teacher at MSS, obtained 95% in his class. He said they went the extra mile, attending weekend classes and crossnighting, especially with learners who need the push.

“The only challenge we had is absenteeism, whereby you have learners that you know that need help but do not attend. Sometimes we had to go to the leaner’s house to ask them why they are not attending,” said Chili.
