Ekurhuleni pushes to update prepaid meters ahead of November deadline

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) continues to update its prepaid electricity meters in a quest to provide an uninterrupted electricity supply to its customers.

The project got underway in Edenvale and Nigel at the beginning of last month.

The city has already covered 78% of the meters in Edenvale and Nigel, and later this month the focus moves to Benoni, Springs and surrounding areas.

“The current electricity meters will automatically cease to work by 24 November 2024 owing to a date rollover problem, unless each meter is updated. This means residents can no longer load electricity on them after the said deadline,” explains metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“The token identifier (TID) rollover programme that the city is using to update the electricity meters will continue until 24 November 2024.”

Tokens purchased but not utilised before the deadline will be invalid.

The city informed the public to update the meter when making the first purchase of electricity after the system settings, a client will receive a receipt with three tokens that need to be entered in the sequence as printed on the receipt.

The update takes about two minutes to process.

This change will affect all prepaid meters with 11 digits and not only the CoE prepaid electricity meters.
