Fellow taxi rank vendors of Nonhlanhla Masiya (21), who was killed at Chris Hani Crossing taxi rank on June 15, are appealing for monetary donations to transport the body of their associate to Maputo (Mozambique).

A stray bullet killed her when unknown men allegedly murdered a taxi driver in assassination style.

People who want to assist by donating can go to Masiya’s associates at the taxi rank. The killed taxi driver is from Zonkizizwe and his name is currently not known.

A vendor who is part of the transportation fundraising group of Masiya, Takale Mawuse (31), said the incident that transpired at the taxi rank still traumatised them.

“We were all as vendors stationed here at the taxi rank when the incident happened, including the drivers and passengers when we saw unknown men fire gunshots. Their target was the taxi driver who ran towards Masiya. A stray bullet hit our fellow vendor.

“Masiya rented a room in Vosloorus and was selling goods at the taxi rank to survive. We have all returned to sell at the taxi rank, although we are still traumatised and scared. This is the only way for us to get an income,” Mawuse expressed.

She mentioned they raised R1 200 so far for Masiya’s transportation.

“Thank you to all the good Samaritans who have donated towards this good cause so far. We hope more people will come on board. We are doing this fundraising drive to ensure our colleague travels home safely and properly.
“We want to raise R10 000 in our fundraising drive that commenced on June 21,” Mawuse added.

The brother of Masiya, Carlos Maluleke, who came from Mpumalanga to Vosloorus, said they are distressed as a family.

“I called my sister earlier on the tragic day and she was very happy. I could not believe it when I was called later that day to inform me my sister passed away.

“My sister was a good person, and she didn’t deserve to die this way. I hope the police will do everything in their power to arrest the ruthless criminals,” said Maluleke.

Ekurhuleni SAPS district spokesperson Captain Nelda Sekgobela confirmed the police were alerted of the gun shooting at the taxi rank on the day.

“When officers arrived at the taxi rank, they found a man, believed to be a taxi driver, shot multiple times, along with a female suspected to be a taxi rank vendor shot once in the upper body.

“The police found several cartridges on the scene. Paramedics, who were called to the scene, declared both the man and woman dead,” Sekgobela stated.

She added no one has been arrested in connection with the crime so far, but they conduct ongoing investigations.

“Anyone with information about the crime may contact the Vosloorus Police Station on 10111,” Sekgobela concluded.
