Lucky Zwane aims to perform well in the ultimate human race

Standard Bank Athletics Club athlete Lucky Zwane(43) hopes to earn a Bill Rowan medal in the up-run for the 97th ultimate human race (Comrades Marathon) from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on June 9.

Zwane, a resident of Vosloorus, said he had trained hard because the ultimate human race requires he run on slopes.

“The race won’t be a walk in the park. You are expected to be physically and mentally fit to conquer it. I participated in the ultimate race twice before, and while preparing for my first Comrade Marathon, I was a bit nervous and kept asking myself silly questions. Luckily, I was surrounded by encouraging and experienced top runners who guided me.

“In my opinion, I did impressively well in my first ultimate human race because my completion time was 09:32:00. In my second race, I dropped a bit and finished the race in 10:02:37,” Zwane explained.

He said his primary goal in the upcoming race is to complete it in 08:25:00.

“With my experience and strong mentality, I hope to do better on the day. I want to finish the race with a beautiful smile. After all, I am doing it for fun because I love the sport, and I also want to encourage and inspire other people, especially my family and friends,” he expressed.

Zwane said it is vital to participate in the ultimate human race as a long-distance runner because it teaches you how to be patient with yourself.

“I look forward to the incredible race. After partaking in it, I will help underprivileged families and orphans. I will donate food parcels, clothes and money to underprivileged families and orphans. I want to make a difference in my country,” Zwane stated.

He said he thanks his family, friends, teammates and supporters for being his pillar of strength while preparing for the ultimate human race.

“I leave Gauteng on June 7 and will be at the Durban Exhibition Expo on June 8 to fetch my racing pack. Then, the race will start at 05:30 until 17:30 on June 9. On June 10, I will be back in Gauteng,” he concluded.
