Moves afoot to reclaim kasi economy

Nafcoc Ekurhuleni began implementing the first Round Table Business Expo (RTBE) roadshow at Vosloorus on March 6.

Township entrepreneurs in and outside Vosloorus gathered under the Nafcoc banner led by Ekurhuleni Nafcoc chairperson George Ratswana.

Wendy Mngadi of Wendy Food and Refreshment, located at 7400 Tzoko Cresent, Ext 9, Marimba Gardens, hosted the event.

They discussed the Township Economic Development Act (TEDA), business challenges, access to the market, collaboration, opportunities, compliance and funding.

The RTBE programme is a resolution adopted during the Nafcoc National Elective Conference held on September 27, 2023, at Sunnyside Sandton, Johannesburg.

The presenters included Mbali Zennith Mthembu from Family Tree Holding, who spoke about funding opportunities and compliance.

She said one of the primary reasons for rejecting funding applications is non-compliance. She said many companies do not continue paying the Companies And Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) annual subscription after registering.

“When we receive your funding application, we do a background check on your business, and, at times, we find a company that is applying is in the process of deregistration.”

She said they do not consider non-compliant companies for funding. A company must be compliant in all aspects, pay its CIPC subscription, file annual tax returns, obtain the BBEEE certificate and audit the company’s finances.

The Skhokho bundle deal gives small businesses special rates.

Provantage MTN stakeholder relation manager Khanya Dlamini shared employment opportunities offered by MTN through Provantage MTN.

It offers three packages – the small package offers five GB of data divided into three GB of anytime data and a two GB business and social bundle. The package also includes 50 minutes for calls.

The medium package includes 10GB and 100 minutes, and the data is divided into five GB of anytime data and a five GB business and social bundle. The large package offers 25GB and 200 minutes, with a 20GB anytime and five GB business and social bundle.

Founder and editor Zaid Sipho Khumalo and marketing consultant Eddie Khoza engaged entrepreneurs about the newspaper’s special rates for local businesses to promote their business through advertising.

The RTBE programme was introduced to local business people in December at the Nafcoc closing ceremony.

It is an empowerment programme that aims to assist formal and informal businesses to realign and control the current township markets as part of capacitating local entrepreneurs to reclaim the local economy.
