City of Ekurhuleni residents encouraged to collect their title deeds

Individuals are urged to visit their nearest customer care centres to collect their title deeds as they are now ready. Also, less fortunate residents are encouraged to register their name in city's database so as to receive rightful services swiftly.

Alderman Masele Madihlaba, the MMC for Human Settlements, invites all RDP housing beneficiaries to visit the closest customer care centres to collect their title deeds.

According to Masele, more than 22 300 unclaimed title deeds are stacked up in customer service offices throughout the city, ready to be collected.

He said that the backlog is mostly brought on by difficulties in identifying the legitimate beneficiaries of RDP houses, unsettled deceased estates, untraceable beneficiaries, informal sales and/or illegal transactions, and differences between the true owners and current occupiers.

“We are calling on all affected residents around the city to come forward and collect their title deeds. Getting a title deed is the ultimate step when it comes to security of tenure and confirmation that the house belongs to you,” he said.

The MMC has visited parts of the city to handover some title deeds so as to reduce the number of title deeds that are within the city’s possession.

When visiting customer care centres (CCCs) to pick up their title documents, members of the public are required to bring their identity cards or green bar-coded identification.

In the meanwhile, the city is requesting that anyone in the public who is unable to pay for services register on the city’s destitute database.

This will guarantee that they receive the following advantages:

• 50% off assessment rates.

• Free garbage collection.

• Free monthly energy usage of 50 kilowatt-hours.

• Free monthly water and sewer use of six kiloliters.

• Free indigent burial for those who are listed as disadvantaged as determined by the state.

• Discounted rates on emergency services like firefighting and ambulances.
