Mr and Miss Katlehong shape young leaders

The reigning queen Motlhapa Ellen Rathobotha (18) and king Luvuyo Thobela of the inaugural Mr and Miss Katlehong (MMK) 2023/2024 shared their journey to the title in the hotly contested beauty pageant.

The pair outlined their individual plans for 2024 on how they will uplift and give back to their respective communities.

MMK showcases the beauty, talent and intelligence of the youth in Katlehong.

It was established in 2023 by Lunga Nkholi, the founder of Lunga Nkholi Cleaning Services Pty Ltd, as his corporate social responsibility.

The executive committee includes Mamikie Mkhondo (PR and administration), Refiloe Selolo (coach and models trainer), Lesedi Choma (event coordinator) and Lunga Nkholi (managing director and finance).

It offers a platform for young men and women to come together and compete for the prestigious titles of MMK.
Nkholi said the event does not only celebrates the contestants’ originality and distinctiveness but also fosters solidarity and community engagement.

Rathobotha, from Nhlapo Section, Katlehong, never had any modelling experience before joining MMK in 2023.

She stated that she had always wanted to work in the modelling profession but had no idea where to begin until she jumped at the chance to compete in a local beauty contest.

Rathobotha acknowledged that there had been challenges along the way, but she persisted and never gave up, which is how she was crowned.

She claimed that obtaining the title required a great deal of bravery, determination, and commitment.

“When I got crowned it was so surreal. It took approximately a week for everything to sink in because I joined suddenly and lacked confidence because I had no previous experience. Being named Miss Katlehong means a lot to me because it gives me a wide platform to serve my community in various ways, as opposed to doing it on my own without the title,” said Rathobotha.

The 18-year-old matriculated at Bracken High School in 2023, she hopes to study law while gaining experience in the modelling industry and brand modelling.

She described herself as an ambitious and loving person who advocates for those who cannot stand up for themselves.

“What I gained from the pageant is that if you’re passionate about something and believe it is right for you, go for it. Do not give up, be stubborn and fight for what you know and believe in,” she said.

Rathobotha said she wants to help orphanage homes and conduct charity drives and awareness campaigns in Katlehong.

The king’s title was awarded to Thobela, from Kgotsong Street, Nadustria section, Katlehong, a Grade 11 learner at Afalang High School.

Thobela is passionate about acting and the entertainment industry. He also began modelling in 2023.

He desires to be one of Katlehong’s greatest models and to improve his craft to gain recognition.

“I never saw it coming. I was overwhelmed and appreciative for the event. What made me feel overwhelmed was the fact that I was the first Mr Katlehong ever, and not only that but the first homosexual title holder, which I thought was making history and inspiring other queer people,” said Thobela.

He said by joining MMK he was trying to combine his passion for acting and modelling as he knew he would try to manoeuvre around it and eventually end up in the entertainment industry.

Thobela said his community is affected by late service delivery like refuse removal, cleaning illegal dump sites and crime.

He noted that to address some of the challenges, they voluntarily work around the community during school holidays to lead by example.

“Whenever I see illegal dumping sites I report that to my director to involve the ward councillor. I help spread awareness on matters affecting our community,” he said.

According to Nkholi, the contestants are chosen based on their academic achievements, involvement in community service and overall personality.

The winners of this pageant will serve as role models for the youth of Katlehong, inspiring them to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives.

“We aim to empower the youth and bring positive change to the community. This is not just a beauty pageant, but a platform for young leaders to shine and make a difference,” she said.
