CoE urge event organisers to abide by the law

These officials must evaluate the application for compliance based on their expertise and departmental regulations.

Event organisers, companies, and individuals planning to host sports and recreational events in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) are urged to abide by the rules, especially safety regulations, at all times in line with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA), Act 2 of 2010.

The act provides for a SASREA committee to preside over applications for events.

Applications to host events must be submitted to the committee at least 21 days before the event takes place, allowing enough time for the structure to consider all the aspects of the gathering.

However, ‘in extraordinary and reasonable circumstances’, the act allows for an event to be approved at least 14 days before it takes place.

According to the CoE spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, the committee comprises members from different departments. These officials must evaluate the application for compliance based on their expertise and departmental regulations.

“A key element of the committee is the safety of the public before, during and after the event. As a city, we have a responsibility to protect the community and we remain steadfast in our efforts to achieve this.

“If the application meets the requirements of the act, it receives a permit to go ahead and if not approved, they provide the organiser the reasons for the decision,” said Dlamini.

“It is important to note that under no circumstances will a permit be issued if an application was not submitted and jointly evaluated by the committee.”

Dlamini said the city wished to make it clear that any event held outside the SASREA, is illegal and the organisers risk facing criminal charges for hosting an illegal event.

Application forms can be downloaded from the city’s website or requested from sasrea@ekurhuleni.gov.za, lerato.lebeko@ekurhuleni.gov.za or shadi.tsebe@ekurhuleni.gov.za
