Zonke sweeps its streets of crime

Residents said they would like to see more such police operations. They claim load-shedding has also contributed to a spike in crime.

Ekurhuleni’s district commissioner General Anna Sithole was joined by senior SAPS management together with other law enforcement agencies during the launch of Operation of Okae Molao on February 16.

Residents said they hope the anti-crime police operation makes a difference.

“I welcome this operation to safeguard our township against criminals,” said Mashudu Monareng, a local housewife who described crime in the area as having spiralled out of control.

Captain Sekgobela, who was standing in for Sergeant Tema as the local police station’s media liaison officer, the operation is an attempt by senior SAPS police officials to flex the strongarm of the law.

Crime in Zonkizizwe includes the brutal murder of 27-year-old Londiwe Mhlungu, a mother of one, whose body was stuffed into a wheelie-bin before it was dragged several meters to an open veld close to the police station where it was set alight.

Mhlungu’s 27-year-old boyfriend is standing trial for her murder.

Residents said they would like to see more such police operations. They claim load-shedding has also contributed to a spike in crime.

Police sector managers along with social crime prevention and brigades drove around Spruitview on February 3 to address crimes such as business burglaries, house robberies, house break-ins and car hijackings.

Police shared safety tips on how to be alert.

On February, 15, Katlehong SAPS, members of the EMPD, officials from the Gauteng Legislature and the CPF addressed learners at the OR Tambo High school on crime and drugs.

This follows school management’s concern about learner behaviour. The school principal pointed out that some of the learners come to school high on drugs, with drug dealers operating inside the premises of the school.
Speakers emphasised the importance of education.

Whilst members of the provincial parliament were conducting their oversight on the school premises, members of law enforcement agencies conducted searches. Drugs such as nyaope and dagga were found.

Police have vowed to keep an eye on the school.
