Katlehong SAPS take gun off streets

The Katlehong SAPS arrested an African male suspect who had with him an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and car-breaking implements on the evening of October 23.

Crime Prevention members from the Katlehong SAPS arrested a suspect (29) for possessing an unlicensed firearm, three live ammunition rounds and car-breaking implements at Sector 4, under Spruitview, Katlehong, on October 23.

The media liaison officer for Katlehong South SAPS, Constable Sivenkosi Mtwa, said the police received a complaint about a white Hyundai Accent without a visible registration.

“The vehicle had a broken window on its rear door, and was seen roaming around Spruitview. According to the information, it was suspected that the occupants were planning to commit house burglary,” said Mtwa.

He said the Crime Prevention members re-grouped and observed the reported vehicle. At approximately 19:45, they spotted the car dropping off one occupant (an African male), who carried a brown leather bag.

“Police then followed him and requested to do a body search. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with a filed-off serial number and three rounds of live ammunition.

“The police found tools used by thieves for breaking into vehicles when they continued searching his bag,” he noted.

Mtwa said the suspect could not produce a firearm license. The police immediately informed him of his rights and arrested and detained him at the Katlehong SAPS.

He will appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s court in due course.

The station commander of the Katlehong South SAPS, Brigadier Albertina Vesi, applauded the members for removing a firearm from a criminal.

She thanked the observant community of Spruitview, citing that they have saved many people from being victims of trio crimes under serious offences.

“Let us continue to do what is best, not only for us but for our community at large,” said Vesi.
