Trio crimes on the rise warns Katlehong SAPS

Katlehong SAPS patrols Spruitview following the hijacking of three vehicles at a public park.

Katlehong SAPS has raised concerns about an increase in robberies and hijackings in the Katlehong policing precinct.

The police warned that dark areas, open fields and public parks are of great concern as criminals use them to target unsuspecting people and commit serious offences.

The sector four manager, Sergeant Lillian Makeke, with social crime prevention coordinator Sergeant Nomathamsanqa Nkokoane and Spruitview CPF members patrolled public parks where people frequently got robbed at different intervals, on August 31.

According to Ekurhuleni district media liaison officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, a couple recently hijacked two vehicles at Spruitview public park.

The previous week, robbers hijacked a courier bakkie, forcefully taking company property and the victim’s belongings.

“This is a call to community members to prioritise their own safety by applying safety measures such as avoiding parking cars in driveways, dark areas, open fields and public parks when it is dark or during load-shedding,” said Sekgobela.

She said the mentality of claiming that vehicles or any other belongings are insured must end.

“The trauma that one has to go through when robbed cannot be reversed because some victims get raped repeatedly.

“At this stage, we have apprehended no suspects for the recent incidents.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on the toll-free crime stop line at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS App to provide information anonymously. Information received will be kept confidential.
