Illegal miners’ equipment destroyed in Alberton

The Alberton SAPS asks for community help to help catch illegal miners (zama zamas) believed to be around from the greater Alberton. This follows an Operation Shanela held in the area where the illegal miners fled the scene.

Illegal mining equipment was recovered in Alberton during Operation Shanela, which was conducted by various law enforcement entities.

The operation was led by Alberton SAPS acting VISPOL commander Captain Morris Hlabangwane.

According to the spokesperson of Alberton SAPS, Captain Manare Ramotshela, the alleged illegal miners noticed that there was an operation and they immediately stopped their vehicle and fled the scene.

“The miners knew that they would be on the wrong side of the law if they were caught and this is why they left everything behind. The illegal miners are still at large and Alberton SAPS would appreciate help from the community to share any information they may have on these people,” said Ramotshela.

The operation saw 86 members from Alberton SAPS, EMPD and crime prevention wardens with 27 vehicles used for visibility to minimise crime in the surroundings.

The confiscated equipment was taken to the nearest scrapyard and destroyed.

“A decision was taken that these materials should be destroyed to ensure that they won’t be used again,” Ramotshela said.

Over 100 individuals were arrested for different crimes during the operation.

“The management would like to express its gratitude to the members and other stakeholders for their participation in the operation, which aims to safeguard the community at all times,” Ramotshela concluded.
