City of Ekurhuleni hires 1 200 marshals to fight crime

The city of Ekurhuleni has showered 1200 locals with employment opportunities. The employed marshals will help law enforcers to fight crime in the area.

To help battle lawlessness, the City of Ekurhuleni has just hired 1 200 community safety marshals.

Community Safety MMC Sizakele Masuku gave the team specific instructions during a welcoming ceremony held at the OR Tambo Government Precinct on September 5.

She advised them to be extra vigilant against crime and any suspicious behaviour they come across as they patrol the streets of Ekurhuleni.

“These men and women are going to be extremely critical in the collection of the data and intelligence which will then inform future operations of the EMPD. They will also be looking at other social ills in the communities, and act as a bridge between the community and the metro on issues of crime and related matters,” Masuku said.

The recruitment of the marshals is part of the Presidential Employment Programme.

Masuku said that they are working to make Ekurhuleni a safer place for all residents.

“A child must feel safe in their community and so must be the oldest person in the same vicinity. We must take back our streets from criminals and make them safer again,” said Masuku.

She challenged locals to collaborate closely with the new marshals because crime is a societal issue that requires everyone’s help.

“It starts with you loving yourself, loving your family, and loving your country. If you do that, you cannot stand and do nothing when you see crime rising in your country,” Masuku concluded.
