Car hijacker gets 7 years behind bars

Alberton SAPS station commander and the management commended a job well done and welcomed the successful conviction of a car hijacker.

A successful conviction was recently secured against a man for car hijacking.

The men committed the crime in Leondale on January 17, 2019. The victim was ordered at gunpoint to keep quiet at her residence while the culprits demanded her car.

“The woman had just parked her car inside the yard when an armed man appeared,” explained Captain Manare Ramotshela from Alberton SAPS.

As the suspect was about to get into the car, she saw her husband at the door and started shouting for help.

“A second suspect appeared and fired one shot. They took the woman’s cellphone. A neighbour assisted by chasing down the suspects, and nabbed the armed suspect,” Ramotshela said.

Officers were called to the scene, and a case of attempted car hijacking was registered. It was handed to the Alberton SAPS’ Trio Task Team Unit for further investigation.

Sergeant Emmanuel Zakwe committed himself to bringing the culprits to book. He gathered all the information and presented it to Germiston Magistrate’s Court for prosecution.

Out of the three culprits who committed the crime, only William Mhlathi was found guilty.

“Mhlathi received seven years of direct imprisonment sentence, suspended for five years,” said Ramotshela.
