City of Ekurhuleni to recover billions owed

“This initiative focuses on optimising the collection of rates and taxes and ensuring accountability for essential service beneficiaries, especially in basic services like electricity and water.”

On Friday morning, the City of Ekurhuleni launched Operation Siyacima Manje-Namhlanje (We are switching off now/today), a campaign to recover over R24b owed to the municipality.

In his maiden budget speech, Finance MMC Nkululeko Dunga undertook to pull out all the stops to recover all monies owed to the municipality through Operation Siyacima Manje-Namhlanje.

The finance department led the decisive initiative involving a team of officials from various departments, including energy, water services, by-law enforcement and the EMPD.

“Revenue enhancement is central to our departmental mandates. This initiative focuses on optimising the collection of rates and taxes and ensuring accountability for essential service beneficiaries, especially in basic services like electricity and water,” said Dunga.

“Operation Siyacima Manje-Namhlanje is set to target major debtors, including companies, SOEs and government departments. We have run out of patience.

“We will switch off electricity for people who are using it, can afford to pay for it, yet choose not to pay. Siyacima Manje.”
