CoE wishes Comrades athletes well

Thirty-five CoE employees will participate in the race.

Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Sivuyile Ngodwana hosted a farewell lunch for the City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club team participating in this year’s Comrades Marathon.

Ngodwana encouraged the team to go out on the weekend and make Ekurhuleni proud.

“You are already the pride of the city, and finishing the race and bringing back the medals would be the cherry on top,” he said.

Acting city manager Thokozani Maseko echoed his sentiments and encouraged more female athletes to join the team.

“We (city management) firmly believe a healthy body harbours a healthy mind. Therefore, your dedication motivates us to take to the streets and follow suit,” Maseko emphasised.

Dignitaries from the city, including MMCs, indicated their support for the 35 employees participating on June 11.

The Comrades Marathon is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon. The annual race is about 89km long and takes place in KwaZulu-Natal between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

This is the 11th year the Ekurhuleni Athletics Club is participating.
