EMPD condemns destructive protests

During protests in the CoE, the EMPD condemned the damaging of council-owned property.

The CoE has seen a rapid increase in violent and destructive protests.

The issues around the lack of service delivery have caused dissatisfaction among the community.

“Members of the community have a right to protest peacefully without infringing on the rights of other members, such as preventing others from going to work, attending school and refusing access to certain public places,” explained Thabiso Makgato, the EMPD media liaison officer.

The EMPD condemned the destruction of public infrastructure essential to improving the lives of others in the communities during the protests.

Makgato said community members also have a role to play in protecting the public infrastructure from theft and vandalism.

To bring to book those responsible, the EMPD appealed to the community to work with police officers.
