DEMS calls for caution when using heating appliances

With winter upon us, the city’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) issued an advisory to locals.

With the cold weather upon us, DEMS urged locals to be cautious when using heating appliances.

With the cold weather and load-shedding, locals will resort to various ways to warm themselves.

William Ntladi, the DEMS spokesperson, warned residents to be vigilant when keeping warm.

“There is an increase in the use of heating appliances, and we want people to be cautious while keeping themselves warm. Never leave a heater unmonitored, and always have a responsible person to guard children when the heater is on. Make sure children are not near a heater because they could play around it, and a fire could erupt,” he said.

He urged homeowners to place heaters at least 1m away from combustibles and never leave them unmonitored in a bedroom.

“Always switch off the heater when going to bed or out of the room. When using a brazier, never sleep with it inside the room because it produces fatal gases. Ensure adequate ventilation so fresh air can enter the room,” Ntladi said.

In case of any emergency, call the CoE’s emergency call centre on 011 458 0911 or 10177 or 112, numbers that will dispatch the nearest rescue team.
